Description

These Air Fryer Apple Fries are a deliciously crispy and healthy twist on traditional fries. Made with Granny Smith apples coated in a flavorful spiced batter, they are air fried to golden perfection and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Served with a sweet vanilla glaze, they make a perfect snack or dessert that’s quick and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Fries

  • 2 large Granny Smith apples
  • 1 cup all purpose flour (130 grams)
  • 1 tablespoon apple pie spice
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar
  • Cooking spray or oil in a spray bottle

Vanilla Icing

  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons whole milk

Instructions

  1. Peel and Slice: Peel the apples and slice them into thin strips using a sharp knife or fry cutter. Set aside.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a small bowl, combine the flour and apple pie spice, whisking well to blend.
  3. Whisk Eggs: In a separate dish, whisk the three large eggs until smooth.
  4. First Flour Coat: Working in batches, toss the apple strips into the flour mixture. Using a slotted spoon, lift them out and shake off the excess flour.
  5. Egg Dip and Second Coat: Dip each floured apple strip into the whisked eggs, shake off excess, then return to the flour mixture and turn to coat thoroughly.
  6. Remove Excess Flour: Ensure all fries are coated but excess flour is shaken off to help them crisp. Place them on a wire rack lined with parchment paper to catch any falling flour.
  7. Preheat Air Fryer: Set the air fryer to 325ºF and allow it to preheat.
  8. Prepare Basket: Spray the bottom of the air fryer basket generously with cooking spray or oil. Arrange the apple fries in a single layer without overlapping and spray the tops generously with oil.
  9. Air Fry First Side: Cook the apple fries for 5 minutes at 325ºF.
  10. Flip and Continue Cooking: Turn the fries over, spray again with cooking oil, and cook for an additional 5 minutes until crispy and golden.
  11. Sugar Coating: Remove the fries and place them on a cooling rack or basket immediately. While still hot, sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar so it sticks well.
  12. Repeat Batches: Cook any remaining apple fries in the same manner and toss with cinnamon sugar while still warm.
  13. Make the Icing: Whisk together confectioners sugar, vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon of whole milk in a small bowl. Add up to 1 more tablespoon of milk if needed to achieve a drizzle-able consistency.
  14. Serve: Serve the apple fries immediately with the vanilla icing as a dip or drizzled over the top for extra sweetness.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for the best tart flavor and crisp texture.
  • Shaking off excess flour is essential to ensure the fries get crispy in the air fryer.
  • The cinnamon sugar adds sweetness without making the fries soggy.
  • Serve the apple fries immediately after cooking for the best texture.
  • You can adjust the thickness of the vanilla icing by adding more or less milk.
  • Cooking in batches prevents overcrowding and ensures even crisping.
