Ingredients
Scale
Apple Fries
- 2 large Granny Smith apples
- 1 cup all purpose flour (130 grams)
- 1 tablespoon apple pie spice
- 3 large eggs
- 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar
- Cooking spray or oil in a spray bottle
Vanilla Icing
- 1 cup confectioners sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-2 tablespoons whole milk
Instructions
- Peel and Slice: Peel the apples and slice them into thin strips using a sharp knife or fry cutter. Set aside.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a small bowl, combine the flour and apple pie spice, whisking well to blend.
- Whisk Eggs: In a separate dish, whisk the three large eggs until smooth.
- First Flour Coat: Working in batches, toss the apple strips into the flour mixture. Using a slotted spoon, lift them out and shake off the excess flour.
- Egg Dip and Second Coat: Dip each floured apple strip into the whisked eggs, shake off excess, then return to the flour mixture and turn to coat thoroughly.
- Remove Excess Flour: Ensure all fries are coated but excess flour is shaken off to help them crisp. Place them on a wire rack lined with parchment paper to catch any falling flour.
- Preheat Air Fryer: Set the air fryer to 325ºF and allow it to preheat.
- Prepare Basket: Spray the bottom of the air fryer basket generously with cooking spray or oil. Arrange the apple fries in a single layer without overlapping and spray the tops generously with oil.
- Air Fry First Side: Cook the apple fries for 5 minutes at 325ºF.
- Flip and Continue Cooking: Turn the fries over, spray again with cooking oil, and cook for an additional 5 minutes until crispy and golden.
- Sugar Coating: Remove the fries and place them on a cooling rack or basket immediately. While still hot, sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar so it sticks well.
- Repeat Batches: Cook any remaining apple fries in the same manner and toss with cinnamon sugar while still warm.
- Make the Icing: Whisk together confectioners sugar, vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon of whole milk in a small bowl. Add up to 1 more tablespoon of milk if needed to achieve a drizzle-able consistency.
- Serve: Serve the apple fries immediately with the vanilla icing as a dip or drizzled over the top for extra sweetness.
