Description

Apple Rose Pastry Blooms are elegant and visually stunning treats made by thinly slicing apples and wrapping them in puff pastry to resemble delicate roses. Softened apple slices are combined with sweet apricot preserves and warm cinnamon, baked to golden perfection, and dusted with powdered sugar for a delightful finish. Perfect for special occasions or a charming dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit

  • 2 large red apples (Honeycrisp or Gala work well)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 cups water

Pastry and Filling

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 2 tablespoons apricot preserves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Finishing

  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples: Slice the apples in half and remove the core and seeds. Then cut the apples into very thin half-moon slices to ensure they bend easily.
  2. Soften the apples: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine lemon juice and water, then add the apple slices. Microwave for about 3 minutes to soften and make them pliable for shaping.
  3. Roll out the pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet and cut it into 6 even strips for wrapping.
  4. Prepare apricot glaze: Mix apricot preserves with a teaspoon of water in a small bowl, then microwave for 30 seconds to make it spreadable.
  5. Brush apricot preserves: Evenly brush each puff pastry strip with the warmed apricot glaze as a sticky base for the apple slices.
  6. Arrange apple slices: Lay the softened apple slices along the top half of each pastry strip, overlapping slightly, with the skin edges sticking out to mimic rose petals.
  7. Sprinkle cinnamon: Lightly dust the arranged apple slices with cinnamon to add warmth and flavor.
  8. Form the roses: Fold the bottom half of each pastry strip over the apples and carefully roll them up to form a rose shape.
  9. Place in muffin tin: Place each rolled apple rose in a greased muffin tin cup to hold its shape while baking.
  10. Bake the pastries: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the rose pastries for 40-45 minutes until puffed, golden, and cooked through.
  11. Cool and dust: Allow the apple roses to cool slightly, then dust them with powdered sugar before serving for an elegant touch.

Notes

  • Use firm, crisp apples like Honeycrisp or Gala for the best texture and flavor.
  • Microwaving the apple slices softens them, making it easier to roll without breaking.
  • Thaw puff pastry completely before working with it to prevent cracking.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature for best taste and presentation.
  • Can be prepared ahead and baked just before serving.
