Description

A hearty and comforting dish combining savory ground beef with fluffy, steamed dumplings. This quick and easy recipe features a rich beef mixture simmered with aromatic spices and vegetables, topped with soft dumplings that steam to perfection. Ideal for a satisfying family meal in under an hour.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Mixture

  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 1 medium Onion, diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 2 tbsp Flour
  • 1 cup Beef Broth
  • 1 tsp Thyme
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup Frozen Vegetables

Dumplings

  • 2 cups All-purpose Flour
  • 1 tbsp Baking Powder
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 1/4 cup Butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup Milk

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until no longer pink and nicely browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain the excess fat carefully.
  2. Sauté Onions and Garlic: Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté for about 4 minutes until soft and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  3. Mix Tomato Paste and Flour: Stir in the tomato paste and flour, mixing well to coat the beef evenly. Gradually add the beef broth while stirring constantly to create a smooth mixture.
  4. Season and Simmer: Add thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper to taste. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 8-10 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken.
  5. Prepare the Dumpling Dough: In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Cut in the softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk until just combined to form a dough.
  6. Add Dumplings to Beef Mixture: Drop heaping tablespoons of the dumpling dough onto the simmering beef mixture, aiming to form 6-8 dumplings. Cover the skillet with a lid and reduce the heat to low.
  7. Steam and Serve: Let the dumplings steam for 15 minutes without lifting the lid to retain the steam. Afterward, remove the lid and let the dish sit uncovered for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm.

Notes

  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner protein option.
  • Use chicken broth instead of beef broth if preferred.
  • Fresh vegetables can replace frozen for a fresher taste.
  • Plant-based milk and margarine are suitable dairy-free alternatives.
  • Do not lift the lid during steaming to ensure dumplings cook properly.
  • For gluten-free option, use gluten-free all-purpose flour in the dumpling dough.
