Description

These Spooky Eyeball Olive Puffs are a fun and easy appetizer perfect for Halloween or any party. Made with flaky puff pastry, sharp cheddar cheese, and creepy pimento-stuffed green olives, they create a delightful and cheesy bite with an eerie eyeball appearance that will thrill and entertain your guests.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet Frozen puff pastry (thawed for easy rolling)

Fillings & Toppings

  • 1 cup Finely shredded cheddar cheese
  • 24 pieces Pimento-stuffed green olives
  • 1 large Egg (whisked for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon Water (to mix with the egg for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the puffs.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry Strips: Take the thawed puff pastry sheet and cut it into 24 strips, each approximately 6 inches long and 1/2 inch wide.
  3. Make Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the large egg and 1 tablespoon of water to create an egg wash that will give the puffs a nice golden finish when baked.
  4. Add Cheese to Pastry: Sprinkle the finely shredded cheddar cheese evenly over each pastry strip, distributing the cheese for a cheesy flavor in every bite.
  5. Roll the Pastry with Olive: Place one pimento-stuffed green olive at one end of each pastry strip and carefully roll it up tightly around the olive to form a small puff.
  6. Seal and Brush: Pinch the seams of the rolled pastry to seal and prevent cheese from leaking out, then brush the tops with the prepared egg wash for a shiny, golden-brown crust.
  7. Arrange in Muffin Pan: Grease a mini muffin pan and arrange each olive puff inside, placing them olive side up to mimic spooky eyeballs.
  8. Bake: Bake the puffs in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until they are puffed up and golden brown.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven, allow to cool slightly before serving to enjoy warm, cheesy, and spooky bites.

Notes

  • Make sure the puff pastry is properly thawed but still cold to make it easier to cut and roll.
  • Use a mini muffin pan to help the puffs hold their shape during baking.
  • You can substitute cheddar cheese with any cheese you prefer, such as mozzarella or pepper jack, for different flavors.
  • Serve with a dipping sauce like marinara or ranch for added flavor.
  • These puffs are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven for a few minutes.
